Attention Medical Practitioners!

When I look at the LIFECompassTM PHR product, I see that the portability of our product makes it suitable for most and the ability to keep information current and private (through device encryption and without connection to the www), serves to provide a sense of security for users. At any rate, here are a few ideas and thoughts on why this may be a direction for us ...
Physicians, of course, who adopt patient-maintained health records beyond the office files would benefit their practices both from the standpoint of information logistics and the enhancement of their relationships with their patients.

But, we haven't really explored the broader spectrum of medical practitioners to date. The wider view would include people like chiropractors, dentists, holistic practitioners, and, of course, specialists, surgeons, and all the many and varied medical support agencies and organizations, etc.

I believe that anyone who touches the lives of patients will ultimately need to embrace this form of information organization as a "new norm" as we move deeper into the 21st century. The benefits to their patients (or clients, as the case may be), are numerous. Not only will they enjoy a stronger and more complete knowledge of their health and their care, but armed with this new information, they will be in a position to interact on a more educated level with their caregivers ... that is to say, they will be able to ask better questions, obtain greater information about how ailments and medications, etc. may impact their lives, and make better decisions more as partners of their caregivers, than ever before.
From a caregiver's standpoint, I suspect, that the peripheral groups like Dentists and Chripractors may benefit even more from the regular use of these instruments than their patients' GPs. If you assume that GPs tend to have closer and longer-term relationships with their patients, it would follow that they know more, at least generally, about them than a caregiver who may have only met this patient on one or two occasions. Having a complete record of past treatments, medications and an overall snapshot of this individual's wellness throughout their lifetime would be quite a powerful tool ... much greater than the current referral form combined with a cursory introductory questionnaire completed by GP and patient, respectively.

Further, there is much less chance that either the referring doctor or the patient would simply forget vital information that could prevent a serious medical error, a duplication of diagnostic test or treatment as happens more than most of us care to consider. Beyond all this, I find myself particularly thinking of the Chiropractic practitioner and the Dentist. With the documents upload function available in the LIFECompassTM PHR, there is facility to maintain a chronological database of x-rays and any other pictorial evidence of change over time.

Of course, this function would be beneficial to any sort of practitioner, I suppose, but I think it would be of particular interest to those who work from a baseline and need to be able to refer to original condition to ensure progress or decline.
And, in the vein of Chiropractic and Dentistry practices, I would point to the regular treatment regimens that both prescribe. Whether we are looking at Dentists who, at minimum, suggest check-ups every six months, or Chiropractors who, upon diagnosis of a problem prescribe treatment, sometimes as often as 3-5 times per week initially, the immediacy with which the LIFECompassTM may be updated by the patient (or with their consent, the practitioner), would be a tremendous asset.

Combine this with its useful properties when their patient ends up in the ER and can readily advise of treatment only hours earlier, there is strong evidence that either, any or all of the peripheral medical groups could benefit both through the endorsement support of this device and even through the provision of a LIFECompassTM PHR to each of their patients.
So, there you have it ... my ideas and thoughts. Would you care to share yours?!!!

So What's The Good Of A PHR Anyway?

Okay, I've talked a lot about what a Personal Health Record is and which is (in my opinion), the best way to create and maintain one ... and I obviously have a vested interest in convincing you to purchase one. But I've never really explained what a PHR might do for you and I think it is extremely important that everyone understand just exactly how and why these things can work for you!

First, I want to remind you that not all PHR's are created equal ... or even in the same way. There are many different types and they all have their advantages and disadvantages. There are paper-based (just really keeping a log of your history in a notebook or computer database), web-based (that are hosted somewhere other than on your computer), and portable (that are created and maintained by the user and often stored on a USB or other device to be kept with the user as they travel through their lives) ... there are even smartphone applications to support medical records these days.

Personally, I favour the idea of a portable record for a variety of reasons ... privacy being at the top of the list because I really don't like the idea of so much very personal information being readily available on the www. As well, your information is with you and readily available when you are away from home, whether travelling, at the office or just running errands. That said, there are merits to all and I really believe that the importance of having a personal health record far outweighs the argument of which one to have ... sort of! I return you to my ongoing sales pitch for the product that my partners and I created - the LIFECompassTM PHR, which is, of course, my top recommendation!!

So back to what they can do for you ... there are so many things, that it's hard to know where to start. I am often asked if these devices will be used by healthcare professionals in an emergency. I want to stress that, while they are all trained to look for medical identification of any description, whether they use this or any other ID, is a professional judgement call for them to make in the moment based on the situation. The point is, you are making it available and for that reason alone, it could help you in an emergency.

A PHR also provides you with a personal copy of your medical information that you can refer to when completing such things as insurance applications or medical questionnaires of any sort. It allows you to know if other people's information about you is accurate through comparision with your own records and it allow you to personally control how much or how little information you wish to share. It also puts you in the driver's seat when it comes to updating your records. You are responsible for the content so you and only you add or delete information unless you allow someone else to do so.

And it's a legacy for the future. Medical information, like family traditions, need to be handed down to the next generation. Think of your PHR as a health diary. Things that you know about yourself, your parents, your grandparents and so on, could have a significant impact on diagnosis for your children, their children and so on! Don't leave such an important function to chance! Provide them with the tools they need to protect themselves and their families!

And, last, but certainly not least, a PHR can provide you with peace of mind! Imagine taking your child to the ER and finding that you can't recall important details about allergies or medications! If you have a PHR for your child, you can quickly and easily provide the information you need either by allowing the ER staff to use your device, or by providing a printed copy of its contents.

Don't be caught unprepared for the unexpected events of life! Visit http://www.lifecompassphr.com/ now to get yours now! Create and maintain a Personal Health Record for yourself and for the people you care for! It really could make a difference today or in the future.

Thinking about the best possible way to blog about Personal Health Records!

So, what do you need? What are you looking for? Privacy concerns are an obvious issue when dealing with PHRs ... putting all that information out into cyberspace? Still believe that it is wiser to keep personal things private ... and that includes keeping them within my control. How much control do you really think you have when you launch your most private details into the www?

Got thoughts? Please share!!

Time Flew!

Happy New Year Everyone! Let's make it the best one EVER!!!!!

And, now you're saying ... "Wow! Long time since your last post! Where've you been?!!!"

You're right, of course! I've been terribly remiss in keeping things current on the blog of late and I apologize. And, I commit to you that I will create at the very least 1 new post each week, so adjust your spectacles and bookmark this page. Things are about to become VERY interesting!

A friend asked me an extremely interesting question today. He said, "When you talk to people about your LIFECompassTM PHR product, what are you saying to them?"

The question took me a little off guard, since this is one of the centre-pieces of our typical conversation, but when I thought for a moment, I realized he wasn't exactly asking me what details I was providing and when I cautiously offered, "Ummm, well, I explain what a PHR is and ..."

Of course, he had me before I finished the sentence! "Why? Why would you feed anyone details of a product they don't know they need?!!!" he said with a little more fervour than I might have expected. "You're not giving anyone anything by providing a bunch of details about a product they've never heard of and don't know they need!!! You've got to find out what a person needs before you can give them the answers to the questions they don't know they have!!"

Okay, I get it now ... I've been going at this all wrong! Thanks to my friend Bob Kantor, I can now much more effectively provide insight into what I bring to the table ... just as soon as you tell me what you need. This blog, therefore, is now open to topic suggestions and ideas. I have changed the look and feel of our community's page and will be writing on a new topic for each post that is relative in some way to your ability to communicate and manage health information effectively, to your good health, and especially to how, together, we can help everyone create an effective personal health record!

So, speak out! Let me know what you want to discuss. It's time to open the information flood gates!!!
